week 1, lovewell 08

June 22, 2008

coming back to lovewell is like coming home.  i found this little place on the planet when i was only 14, and spent 3 summers awakening the creative spirit within me, in harmony with 30-40 other people.  now–as a staff member–i get to relive that experience with students and other adults, and because of my age i am more appreciative of what this is, what it does, and how it can shape, define, and save a life.

shaping: the kid with no safe harbor, who is always on the outskirts, a little too intense, a little too talkative, a little to emotive, whatever—here, that kid has a home.

defining: the student who loves to write, and loves music, who discovers here that he is a songwriter, and ends up going to princeton. (what, what, pomerantz)

saving:  all of us who need to feel there is somewhere on the planet where NO ONE judges us—where the decisions we make are accepted because we are uniquely and honestly human, and that humanity connects, rather than separates us.

i say a prayer of thanks each day that this is the life i was born into, and one of thanks that lovewell exists for those who only find safety here.  it is hard to imagine a world where some people never feel safe and accepted.

of course, when i am here i miss my physical home.  i ache to hug my husband, tell him in person how much i love him, sit in the same room with him and just be.  i speak to him every day, and spoke to my mom yesterday, and was reminded that i am one of the lucky ones.  this peace of lovewell in ft. lauderdale is carried with me all year round because the people in my life are stunning.

here i am

June 16, 2008

at lovewell now.  rock taststic.  a few gems from the process so far.

: here i am…barack me like a john mccain. (e.d.)

—-

there are some people who could be catchin’ bj’s around here. (m.d.)

—-

your love is like a whale to me, i try to reel it in but it is too big (s.d.g.)

—-

is this a musical? (quoted by j.j.m.)

—-

is he smuggling a shasta can in those shorts? (all)

—-

because on fridays… (c.g.)

this is me at 2:30 a.m. before picking up erin

all packed, ready to go.  i’m so excited, but stressed slightly about the traveling, which make me anxious due to my deep need to be in control, and the fact that i am leaving alex.  of course my husband is a grown man who can take care of himself, but this morning we discovered, after a trip to the walk in clinic, that he has been bitten by a brown recluse spider.  suck.  so he’s been ibuprofening and cold compressing all day, and i stripped the bed and found and killed the fucker.  i HATE shit like this–uncontrollable, frightening, and completely random.  the swelling is going down, and it look like it is getting better–it was not a big bite, but scary nonetheless.  if you are in town while i am away you might think of ringing him up to say hey, and to make sure his chest hasn’t turn black with spider funk.

ok, so the challenge, which i know you are intrigued by.  this semester some peeps at my school decided to exchange cds that were narratively representative of themselves.  we listened to the musical versions of each others lives and, in the words of ani difranco:

I know there is strength                                                                                                                                        in the differences between us

and I know there is comfort
 where we overlap

so the challenge to you is: make a playlist of the songs that, when played together, tell the story of your life. you can tell your whole story, or only a portion of it, but you must use at least 12 and no more than 20 tracks.  spoken word tracks allowed, but should be kept to a minimum.

here’s mine–happy creating!!

alex’s car is still in the shop, how long does it take to fix a freaking seat belt??   so sharing a car is making us hang out more and surprisingly, we don’t hate each other yet.  we’re both so independent that we need our space, and that extends to our automobiles.

—-

the commercial for gas-x where they say ” your son rip is on line toot” cracks me up everytime.  because i’m 5.

jason is the coolest.

even though i am much more of a dog person than a cat person, this made me giggle.

pull off the band-aid

June 5, 2008

one of my biggest pet peeves is when people can’t just pull off the band-aid, acknowledge that an era is over, and move on.  each time you think you’ve shut a door to a room, someone comes banging on it with an axe and forces you to go into that damn room with them. a room filled with forgettable art, bad poetry, and the slightly sweet smell of rotten fruit.

you see, i’m watching someone move into his moment of greatness, starting to hit a stride (or at least trying to hit one) and it is hard to be his staunch supporter knowing somewhere there is a woman too immature to just let him be.

this post could be about hillary clinton, who clearly needs to give up the ghost.  i could be telling her to back off, stay quiet, and move on.  i would be a nicer person if this was purely political.  but, if the person this is actually about should happen across this post, please please please, pull off the band-aid because you are the only one still hanging on.

my niece (!)

June 5, 2008

alex’s sister abi and her wonderful husband brent welcomed little charlotte anne into the world at 10:20 pm on June 3rd.  she is my first niece, and i am aching to get to ohio to see the happy family.  she is such a blessed child, to have a and b for parents.  they are brilliantly kind, hysterically funny, honestly good people and i love them dearly.  welcome welcome welcome to the world, little one.
